The walnut tree on our property was planted back when the house was built, it is hardly standing at this point but still gives every year. Walnuts are collected when the skin is a ripe bright green full of pungent tannins ready for attaching to fibers. Tannins are perfect for mordanting cellulose & animal fibers.
